FAQs
If you work in the Energy and Utilities’ sector, wherever you are based, our friendly team will be happy to discuss your training requirements and answer any questions. Here are some frequently asked questions:
What qualifications do I need to become an Assessor?
To become an Assessor, you will need the Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement – better known as the CAVA. This is the nationally-recognised qualification for anyone wanting to be an Assessor. It is a generic qualification which covers all occupations.
Employers will also want you to have appropriate work experience in the area you wish to assess. This can be proven with a number of years working in the Energy and Utilities’ sector and/or relevant qualifications.
Who is the Assessor course aimed at?
The Assessor course is aimed at people who assess others’ skills and knowledge in either work and/or training environments. It covers how to plan, prepare, conduct and gather evidence for assessment using a range of assessment methods.
What are the Assessor course entry requirements?
There are no entry or qualification requirements for the Assessor course. We do, however, recommend that the online training route is best-suited to people with some experience of assessment.
What is the structure of the Assessor qualification?
The Level 3 Assessor Certificate comprises 3 units of competence:
- Understand principles and practice
- Assess occupational competence in the work environment
- Assess vocational skills, knowledge and understanding
All 3 units are mandatory.

What support do I receive from ATDirect?
Our training is delivered by real people in real time, so you can interact with your trainer and ask questions. This means training is more relevant and interesting, and can be adapted to your individual needs as you progress through the course … and is much more enjoyable! Your trainer also acts as your Assessor and will support you throughout the process through to certification.
How is the Assessor course assessed?
You are assessed on the basis of a Portfolio of Evidence and a short, informal end-of-course discussion. Your Assessor will support you in gathering evidence for your Portfolio and will conduct the end-of-course discussion.
How long does it take to get qualified?
If getting qualified is a priority for you, it is possible to complete all the work necessary in a few weeks.
We encourage all our clients to complete their qualification quickly while training is fresh in the mind and to avoid ‘drift’. However, if speed is not your priority, you have up to 1 year to complete the work before your registration expires.
Who awards the certificates?
What does the course cost include?
Are there other Assessor qualifications?
There are 3 other Assessor qualifications:
- A theory-only qualification
- A 2-unit award which covers assessing in a work environment only
- A 2-unit award which covers assessing in a training environment only
We recommend the Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement (the 3-unit qualification) because it covers all of the above and will equip you to assess in different environments and using a wide range of assessment methods. However, if you wish to pursue one of the above, please contact us for further details.
